Delly finds trouble wherever she goes. Is there a way to change that? Brud is convinced that the boy playing basketball and does not talk is amazing. Is he?
Plot:
Delly has lived her life not asking for permission. Instead, she gets in trouble and then asks for forgiveness. This all changes when Ferris Boyd comes to town. Ferris does not talk and she does not like to be touched but man can she play basketball. In order to become friends, Delly must ask Ferris for help instead of doing things her way. The two quietly and cautiously become friends. Delly, who was about to be expelled, gets in less trouble and her mother is relieved. Ferris has another admirer though. Brud thinks she is a boy who he wants to be. He watches her each day while she plays alone. Finally, they become friends as well, but when Brud finds out she is a girl, will they stay friends. This book explores what it means to be a friend.
Review:
This was a slow book to get though but the message is clear from early on in the book. Ferris comes from a rough world and as mysterious as she is, she wants to have friends just as others do. Delly finds that kindness trumps overpowering people every time. This book explores the complexity of friendships. There is jealously, anger, laughter, protection and love in this one novel. After Ida B, this book is another good novel by Hannigan.
