Using Opposing Viewpoints

Opposing Viewpoints in Context

Genre: Current Issues Database
Interest Age: 14-adult

About Opposing Viewpoints and Critical Evaluation:
Opposing viewpoints in context is a database filled with current issues and events. It strives to represent both sides of the issue and give people an accurate look at the current happenings of own world. The interface is colorful and easy to use. As the video shows, there are highlighted stories on the main page that change periodically. Once a topic is decided on, the database takes the reader to a topic page. The page is split into different categories. There is a section for viewpoints, as well as the different types of journals such as academic journals, magazines, and newspapers.

Because of the set up, this is a very easy to use database. It is clear, concise and brings the researcher to the core of the issue. There is not a lot of extra information witch makes this database great for researching a particular issue. I would like to know how far back the records go with each of the topics, but I think the database is useful on the whole.

About Gale:
Gale is part of Cengage Learning corporation. It is an academic resource for e-research. They have a reputation of being accurate in their resources and very clear in their databases. Gale has many different databases for all different ages which makes the company marketable to all levels of libraries. They are based out of Michigan and not only partner with schools and libraries, but have helped businesses with their information services. Web based information is very important in today's society and Gale has been able to harness the skills to help other companies succeed.

Because of its widespread appeal, Gale is a major part of many library databases. This one is newer than some of the other databases, but it still has the standards applied to it as all the others.

Challenging Issues:
If this database were to be challenged, I would go through the selection process with the challenger as well as explain the rationale for it. There are many good qualities in this publication that could be reason to have it in a collection.

Why Read this:
Opposing viewpoints is a great database for writing papers or doing presentations because it shows more than one side. This way, more accurate information can be accessed by the students. It is easy to use and current.
