About Teen Voices Magazine and Critical Evaluation:
Teen Voices was started in 1988 as a magazine for teenage girls dealing with real issues. The magazine has articles about sex, drugs, success, college, and inner growth. Many teen girls have low self esteem and feel validated only by boys. This magazine strives to give girls the strength to do things on their own. On their website, Teen Voices states that their mission is to "support and educate teen girls to amplify their voices and create social change through media."
Each issue deals with serious issues that teens are facing each day such as depression, STI's, racism, sexism, pregnancy, sexual identity, and hunger. The layout is colorful and inviting but has a serious tone just like the magazine.
About the Author:
This is the only magazine of alternative print written by and for teen girls in the United States. It was started by two Massachusetts women who wanted a place to empower girls and make them feel like they can do anything. The magazine is still based out of Boston and there are many community outreach programs sponsored by Teen Voices. They hold poetry writings and mentoring sessions for the teens in Boston.
The magazine has 45,000 readers in 24 countries and the website has been accessed from 179 countries around the globe. Slowly, but surely the magazine is empowering teen girls around the world.

Challenging Issues:
If this magazine were to be challenged, I would go through the selection process with the challenger as well as explain the rationale for the magazine. There are many good qualities in this publication that could be reason to have it in a collection.
Why Read this:
This magazine is one that every girl should read at one time in her life. It is full of important issues people are faced with on a daily basis and helps girls see themselves as powerful beings in this world. With all the history of suppression in our world, a magazine like this should be in every library.
