Plot:
Addie has a mother who is either happy and ready for anything in life, or everything is terrible. This is hard for a little girl to find normalcy in. When Dwight, Addie's stepfather, and her mother separate, Dwight gives them a trailer under a bridge. Addie's mother is less than pleased, but they make a home there. Addie's sisters are with Dwight because he is their father. As Addie endures the roller coaster of her mother's emotions, she needs friends at school and the gas station close to home. She realizes that maybe there is never a normal.
Review:
This is a heart warming and heart breaking book about love and what it means to care about people. Addie has a mother who cares more about herself than her daughters, but Dwight truly cares for her. The love he shows her even though she is not biologically his daughter is wonderful as well as the people who take Addie in at the gas station. It is also a story of resilience. Addie finds happiness in the little things such as the height of her new bed instead of looking at the negatives as her mother does. This is a book of overcoming circumstances one cannot help.
